Death in accident is first since 9/11

06/26/03: Florida — Crane is dumped into creek | Dead Link |

A 120-ton crane being used in the replacement of the Telogia Creek Bridge near the Juniper community collapsed the bridge and tumbled into the creek Monday morning. The crane was being used to drive pillings into the ground for the new bridge when witnesses said the bridge began to slowly sink under the cranes weight. No one was injured in the incident. Work crews were called in to retrieve the crane.

The scene of the accident was the Global Oil Company in Revere. The worker eventually was extracted and there is no word on his condition. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating whether the company and the crane's owners, Glancy Crane based in Avon, had complied with all safety measures.

A 34-year-old Orange man was electrocuted and two others injured today in a mine accident in the NSW central west.

Iowa State spokesman John McCarroll said crews were dismantling the crane's boom, which was in the down position. He said they were taking bolts out of the center of the boom when it came apart and fell on the worker, trapping the man.
