Icon: FatalIcon: FatalIcon: FatalIcon: Fatal 01/29/03: China — A crane on a piledriver boat operating on a river near Heshan City in Guangdong province toppled over, taking the boat with it, the Guangzhou Morning News said.

Four workers were confirmed dead and six are missing.

01/17/03: Columbia, South Carolina — Crane accident leads to DOT investigation

The crane is owned by White Crane Co., of Columbia. Alan Wertz, a South Carolina Department of Transportation engineer for the project, said crane operators must have certification to operate a crane. The operator's background will be explored in the investigation, he said.

Dummy Awards 01/16/03: Friendswood, Texas — Crane boom crashes through signal lights

The incident was sparked at 10:05 a.m. when a 1996 International crane truck, driven by John Russell Squier, 22 of Splendora, Texas struck the traffic light cables as he drove eastbound through the intersection of N. Friendswood Drive and W. Edgewood, a major intersection.

The crane had apparently not been properly secured and the boom was raised as it moved down the roadway, causing it to strike the cables.

2003: EMS Injury 01/11/03: San Jose, California —

Three people were hurt in an accident at a construction site at 879 Blossom Hill Road in the Westfield Shopping Town-Oakridge Mall Thursday morning. A large crane struck a 25- to 30-foot steel vertical beam (estimated at 2,500 pounds), knocking it over onto a metal shed. The beam hit two foremen and a construction worker. The three were taken to Valley Medical Center.

01/02/03: Sommerville, Massachusetts — A brand new pile driver laid on its side with a 70ft. concrete pile in the air.

The operator said, "The ground gave out." But, I ( report sender) could not see any evidence of that. The machine had about 50 hours on it.
