05/25/01: Miami, Florida — It is reported a Lorain MC790 boom fell. This was right after a heavy rainstorm. No details on boom length or injuries, but it is reported that the operator was in the cab. Hopefully, more information about the incident will come in later. |
| 05/25/01: Miami, Florida — Mechanical failure — controlled incident It is reported that a GCI crane was working on Collins Avenue in Miami Beach with 125' main and a 55' jib when a mechanical problem developed. The operator said he lost both boom functions. While towering the crane down for further inspection, about half-way down the boom started to run. Thankfully, the area was cleared prior to this and there were minimal damages and no injuries. The incident is still under investigation to determine the exact cause of the mechanical malfunction. Update: We dismantled the boom hoist today. The main shaft broke right where it enters the planetary gears. It was obvious this is the weak point of the unit as the shaft is 1 1/2" in diameter and is machined down to almost 3/4" where it is splined for the planetaries. This failure is rare but not unheard of. We called around and learned of three other duplicate incidents. With the age of our machines we are now checking the other GCI and tracking down replacement hoists or at least new shafts for the others. The angle of the break explained why it didn't just freefall, it was partially grabbing all the way down. Doyle, if you would, put a heads up notice by our report for other GCI owners with my email if they have any questions. For questions, contact Bill Titus: btitus@mindspring.com |

| Dead Link | | Cache Copy below | NOTE: This one gets a Dummy Award The Florida State Highway Patrol reported a construction crane snagged power lines on Interstate 95 nead Delray, knocking them down across the highway and onto several vehicles. No injuries were reported. the Hubbard Construction crane, driven by Arthur Soares of Hollywood, Florida. He was unloading metal sheeting for bridge reconstruction on I-95 when he headed south in the median with the crane's boom raised at a 45-degree angle the Highway patrol said. At 1:40 p.m., the crane's boom caught the power lines and a support cable running across the highway and brought them down across all lanes of traffic, a trooper's report said. David Schofield, of Georgia, was heading north on I-95 when he saw a power line and broken wooden utility pole heading straight for his semi-trailer truck. “I wasn't worried as much about the wire as I was the pole coming at me,” he said. The power line ended up draped across the front of his truck, inches from the windshield, while the shredded piece of pole was dragged underneath his truck. Power lines also hit a northbound pickup and a semi-trailer truck traveling south, the Highway Patrol report said. The gridlock extended to other north-south roads where traffic was diverted. Northbound traffic was forced to exit at Linton Boulevard and diverted to U.S. Highway 1, while southbound traffic exited at Atlantic Avenue and was re-routed through Congress Avenue. However, drivers were exiting I-95 in Boynton Beach to avoid the slow traffic and found themselves in another morass on bumper-to-bumper Congress Avenue. This is the 9th power line accident reported to this site this year. Again, all were avoidable. |
| Dead Link | | Cache Copy below | A construction worker was injured yesterday when a section of a crane fell on him near Philadelphia International Airport. Aceveno was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania with chest trauma, and his condition was listed as fair. |
This is the 8th power line accident reported to this site this year. Again, all were avoidable. Just follow one simple safety rule. DO NOT work cranes near energized power lines. What's so difficult about obeying that safety rule? |
