10/30/1996: New York — Crane Accident in Harlem Kills 2

A construction crane collapsed in Harlem this morning killing two people and injuring three. The accident took place at at Lenox Avenue and 112th Street.

9/07/1996: Port Charlotte, Florida — Kids escape school bus wreck with 30-ton crane

Shortly after the students were dropped off at Charlotte Harbor and Peace River Elementary schools, a 30-ton motorized crane smashed into the rear of their school bus. Three of the four adults aboard the bus, the driver of a car, and the crane driver were all injured in the collision.

A crane from a construction site fell onto the roof of the Kennedy Bookstore yesterday morning, causing thousands of dollars in damage to the bookstore at 405 South Limestone Street. No one was injured.

Cal/OSHA Deputy Chief of Field Operations Mark Carleson said the investigation showed mechanical error was likely the largest contributor to the accident. Carleson said inspectors found the crane used at the mall was out of adjustment.
